Cultivando La Salud: Breast and Cervical Cancer Education Program

In 1998, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded NCFH a grant to assess screening practices among migrant and seasonal farmworker women age 50 and over, and to develop an intervention in order to increase mammography, clinical breast exam, breast self-exam and Pap test use among this community. As a result, NCFH developed the Cultivando La Salud Breast and Cervical Cancer Education Program, based on the promotora-based educational model. This program is intended to provide Migrant and Community Health Centers with the tools to successfully implement this program and to encourage this population to get screened for breast and cervical cancer.

The Cultivando la Salud Cancer Education Program contains the following program materials:

  • The Program manual which is intended for program planners, is the "how to guide" for program implementation. It contains information such as program goals and objectives, recruitment and maintenance of promotoras, sample budget plans, and forms to be used for tracking.
  • The Breast and Cervical Cancer Training Curriculum is a bilingual training guide, which contains interactive lessons including the role of the lay health worker, general breast and cervical cancer information, teaching methods and practice session, which help to prepare the promotoras for delivering the education in the community.
  • The teaching tools for promotoras include a teaching guide, video, flipchart and breast model. All the materials include messages that are designed to increase knowledge, influence attitudes, provide cues, and facilitate access to screening services with the intent of increasing the following behaviors: cervical cancer screening (Pap tests), Breast Self-Exam (BSE), Clinical Breast Exam (CBE), and Mammography.
    • The Teaching guide contains lesson plans to help promotoras plan their educational sessions.
    • The Flipchart conveys messages that address barriers currently influencing breast and cervical cancer screening in the community. The flipchart has been designed in a "user friendly" format, which contains graphics on one side for the audience to see, while on the other side, it contains a variety of important messages, in English and Spanish that the promotoras will be disseminating.
    • The Spanish video is approximately 25 minutes in length and explains breast and cervical cancer, screening recommendations, and how to overcome barriers for screening procedures. It portrays farmworker women in their homes and at work.
    • The breast model is an additional training tool to assist women in learning the proper way to do a breast self-exam.

NCFH will also provide technical assistance to help get this program started. Copies of the program and its materials are available through the NCFH Resource Center. For ordering and price information, refer to the Resource Center Catalog.
