Migrant
Specific Expertise
These workshops may be offered at Migrant Stream Forums and
other conferences. They are also available on a fee basis
to health centers that are interested in having these workshops
presented at their site. The presentation will be tailored
to their specific needs and time constraints and will include
appropriate materials for implementation.
Migrant
Health Orientation and Training
- Introduction to Migrant Health. This
workshop is intended to provide new health center staff
members with an orientation to the history of the Migrant
Health movement, funding sources and distribution, the health
care structure and the types of health care services delivery
methods available.
- Back to the Basics. This workshop
is intended to provide new staff members with an introduction
to the farmworker world. The participants will receive information
about the farmworker movement, the working and living conditions,
socio-economic characteristics, cultural beliefs and practices,
health seeking behaviors, health care problems, barriers
to accessing health care and the challenges for continuity
of care.
- Farmworker Status Verification. This
workshop is intended to provide health center personnel
with the responsibility to supervise or make eligibility
determination on farmworker migratory status. The session
will discuss the importance of the skills and tools needed
to properly identify, document and report the status of
their farmworker users. .
- BPHC Expectations for Migrant Health Centers.
This workshop is intended to provide management staff with
the information and tools to understand what the Bureau
of Primary Health Care expects all health center programs
to cover in order to be in compliance with Public Health
Service Act Section 330 funding.
- Maximizing Local Resources for Migrant
Health. This workshop is intended to guide those individuals
who are direct service providers, lay health workers and
other migrant professionals on how to use existing local
and national programs to improve health care access to
farmworkers and their families. Strong emphasis will be
placed on dental and vision care, pharmaceutical programs,
as well as federal guidelines for regular and emergency
Medicaid/CHIP eligibility. Participants will receive Call
for Health information to be distributed within their
health center.
- Farmworker Specific Breast and Cervical
Cancer Prevention Program Development and Planning.
This workshop is intended to provide program planners
with the knowledge, step-by-step process and the tools
to successfully plan and develop a comprehensive breast
and cervical cancer prevention program for the farmworker
population. This training is recommended as a three-day
workshop. The participants will receive a complementary
training package with a curriculum, video, flipchart,
teaching guide and a program manual to successfully implement
the program in their health center.
- Comprehensive Cancer Training.
This workshop is intended to provide trainers and health
promoters with leadership training, knowledge and tools
to teach basic cancer related topics. Topics in the training
include: oral, breast, cervical, prostate, testicular,
lung and skin cancers. This training is versatile and
can meet the health centers' individual needs. The participants
will receive a complementary training curriculum to be
used to train others.
