Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Austin Affiliate

Hays County Project
Funded by Susan G Komen Foundation

NCFH is currently implementing and expanding the Cultivando la Salud breast cancer intervention in the greater Buda/Kyle areas by partnering with local businesses and CBO’s. Cultivando la Salud (CLS) is a breast cancer education program designed to encourage women to get access to breast cancer screening services. A key partner in the project is Community Action, Inc. (CAI) in San Marcos, Texas. Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) referrals will be made to CAI for women 20 years of age and older and for diagnostic procedures for women over 40. Mammography will be provided by Seton Mobile Clinic at NCFH offices for women 40 and older.

Two lay health promoters currently work on the project to provide outreach to 500 women providing each woman with at least 1 contact to raise their awareness about breast cancer screening. The women are identified through a rigorous community outreach campaign, collaborating with local organizations, churches, and employers. Appointments are made with at least 250 of these women to provide them with education on breast cancer and referral for breast cancer screening. Individual follow up is conducted for all referrals for screening to remind them of their appointments and insure that the exams were completed. Evaluation and reporting will track and document outcomes for these 500 clients and summarize the experience.
