Who
Are America's Farmworkers Slide Show
Two slide presentations are available from the National Center
for Farmworker Health. The first, Who Are America's Farmworkers?,
presents an overview of farmworkers and their role in the
agricultural economy. It is suitable for use with high school
and university students and adult audiences. The second, Where
Does Food Come From?, was developed for the health curriculum
The Tool Box and is designed to introduce farmworkers to elementary
school children in grades 1-3.
To
encourage individuals to spread the word, the National Center
for Farmworker Health developed a slide presentation which
is appropriate for presentations to church and civic groups,
students, professional associations, state and local government
officials, funding agencies, and any other group the needs
a basic introduction to farmworkers.
Who Are America's Farmworkers? introduces farmworkers
to groups with no previous background in farmworker issues.
Starting at the grocery store, the presentation discusses
farmworkers' role in the agricultural economy, their lifestyle,
and the ways migration affects their health and well-being.
The presentation includes 80 color slides, a slide script
with slide key, and a user's guide with ideas for using the
presentation.
Of
all the problems that beset farmworker families, the problems
of children are some of the most heart-wrenching. Along with
their parents, they face physical danger, health hazards,
and social stigma. The disruption of their education from
travel and work may make it difficult for them to build better
lives for themselves, and they may miss out on basic health
information that other children take for granted.
With these problems in mind, designed a slide show entitled
Where Does Food Come From? This presentation shows
children how food is grown in the fields and harvested for
our tables by farmworkers, reinforcing the concept of farm
labor as honorable work.
Note: Where Does Food Come From? is available as part
of The Tool Box: A Health Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3.
