It explains that arthritis occurs when a joint, a place where two bones meet, becomes inflamed and the resulting breakdown of cartilage leads to pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joint. It identifies common types of arthritis as being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It describes signs of arthritis and discusses testing and treatment. The document identifies those symptoms for which a doctor should be called immediately. The information is available in English and Spanish.
