Rx Savvy for Healthy Outcomes Prescriber Information Project

In 2004, the Attorneys General of the 50 states and the District of Columbia settled a lawsuit against Warner-Lambert for unlawful marketing of the drug Neurontin.  Among other things, this settlement provided for a $21 million Consumer and Prescriber Education grant program to be administered by a Special Committee of State Attorneys General.   The Prescriber Education Grant Program funded 28 projects, including the National Center for Farmworker Health, designed to provide health care professionals information relating to the marketing of prescription drugs.  The goals of the Prescriber Program are to improve prescribing practices by: 1) educating health professionals at all levels of training about the drug development and approval process; 2) making health professionals aware of pharmaceutical marketing practices and assisting them in developing the knowledge and skills to evaluate those techniques; and 3) providing examples and strategies for evaluating existing sources of drug information and for accessing unbiased sources of information about drugs. With the Prescriber Education Grant, NCFH established an Advisory Committee made up of prescribers from around the country to guide project staff through the development of its’ Prescriber Information Project.  NCFH conducted focus groups with three large Community and Migrant Health Centers (C/MHCs) in order to identify the most important issues facing C/MHC staff around pharmaceutical marketing, the influence of the industry on prescribing practices and educational needs relative to marketing practices.   Based on focus group findings and input from the Advisory Committee, NCFH developed the Rx Savvy for Healthy Outcomes Prescriber Information Project to address the unique needs of C/MHC prescribers.  The Project consists of four main components:
