Health champions are always looking for innovative ways to better serve the migratory and seasonal agricultural worker (MSAW) population. One of the many great things we have seen in our work over the past 5 years has been the willingness of health center staff to share their promising practices with colleagues to ensure we reach our mutual goal of increased access.

Increase Access To Care for Agricultural Workers Program Promising Practices Award
2024

Since the inception of the Increase Access to Care for Ag Workers Program in 2015, we have seen a variety of great promising practices implemented at health centers that have contributed to the increase of MSAWs and their families served nationwide. The IAC Network Promising Practices Award was established in 2018 to showcase promising practices and acknowledge health centers’ efforts to continuously identify ways to increase access to quality health care for the MSAW population.   
   
Central Florida Health Care (CFHC)  is being recognized for their innovative adaptation of outreach practices and strategic partnership and collaboration development, resulting in systems change to meet the everchanging needs of MSAW families in their service area. Their efforts are a testament to their health center team’s passion and commitment to serve this underserved population and ensure they remain a priority.  We are pleased to acknowledge CFHC’s great work!

CFHC was recognized at this year’s inaugural Fall 2024 Agricultural Worker Health Symposium in Tampa, FL, on Tuesday, December 3rd.

Promising Practices & Strategies

Since the inception of the Ag Worker Access Campaign, we have seen a variety of great promising practices (unique, out-of-the-box ideas) implemented at health centers that have contributed to the increase in the number of MSAWs and their families served nationwide. The following are strategies were shared by Health Champions from throughout the U.S. as one of their many contributions to the Ag Worker Access Campaign initiative. We hope these strategies will assist your increase access efforts, and would greatly appreciate you sharing your successful strategies with us, to include here as well.

OUTREACH & MARKETING

  • We build strong relationships w/our MSAW families 
  • Focus groups w/farmers to get ideas that help create strategies to increase access to care 
  • Outreach 
    • Outreach staff based at all health center sites
    • Clinical outreach to Camps 
    • Use of Promotores to outreach to MSAWs
    • Enhanced outreach and follow up 
    • Reach out to H2A employers 
    • Delegating activities to coordinators so director can outreach to other partners, crew leaders, providers
    • Using a Mobile unit to provide health education 
    • Host annual health fairs to attract farmworker families
    • Providing outreach with transportation
    • Increased participation in community events (Mexican Consulate, Department of Health and Environmental Control & churches)

  • Formed a new relationship w/the Education Commission that offers FREE summer camp to MSAW children
  • Collaboration w/other agencies & programs: university students

HEALTH CENTER OPERATIONS, DATA COLLECTION & UTILIZATION

  • Have an employee assistance program to pay for specialty, medical equipment, transportation and other incidentals
  • Making “ID” cards for workers to facilitate the registration process whenever they seek care
  • Implement/improve sliding fee scale
